Re-Established in 2018
The North Rockland High School Corporal Manny Lopez NJROTC Honor Society was founded by the first advisors Major Daniel L. Hooker U.S.M.C. (ret.) and Petty Officer Phillips U.S.N. (ret.). This is truly remarkable because with less than a month at the school Petty Officer Phillips helped found the Cpl. Manny Lopez NJROTC Honor Society. Cadet Ensign Joseph La Barbera the first President also played a key role in helping form the Cpl. Manny Lopez NJROTC Honor Society. The Cpl. Manny Lopez NJROTC Honor Society requirements were partly based off of the requirements of the old NJROTC Honor Society. It was also based off of the End of the Year Report. By doing so ensures that cadets are motivated to help gain as many points as possible for the End of the Year Report. The end of the year ribbons were also included because those ribbons are awarded to the top cadets.
Principal Dr. Gill and the Board of Education approved the NJROTC Honor Society on Friday, August 24th, 2018. On November 27th, we inducted 12 cadets into the honor society during the Math, Science, Technology and Business (M,S,T,B) Honor Society induction ceremony. Our official course name is Naval Science so we fall under the category of science. That same night we had a color guard present the colors for the Pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem. We also, had cadets volunteer to hand out the brochures. Cadets inducted that night wore a medal with the unit logo on it. The ribbon of the medal is blue and gold to represent our honor society's and the United States Navy's colors. Cadets in the honor society will wear the medal at graduation. There is also a banner hanging up to represent our honor society in the auditorium. Cadets inducted will also receive a 50% blue and 50% gold ribbon to wear on their uniform.
On Memorial Day 2019 we came up with the idea of naming our honor society after Corporal Manny Lopez who died while serving in the U.S. Army. He was a graduate of North Rockland High School and the most recent graduate of North Rockland to die while fighting for our country. With the Principal's, Board of Education's and his mother's Yolanda Lopez's approval we were able to be named after Cpl. Manny Lopez on June 12th, 2019.
