(Speech from Induction Ceremony 11/27/18)
Good evening, my name is Cadet Ensign Joseph La Barbera and I am President of the newly founded NJROTC Honor Society. I want to extend my gratitude to the Board of Education, Ms. Eckhert, Dr. Felicio, our Principal Dr. Gill, all the assistant principals and Mrs. O’Sullivan. They all proved that a student could come up with an idea for an honor society and that they would be willing to turn that idea into reality. We are all truly lucky that the school’s administration “Makes it Happen”.
My time in the JROTC gave me a greater understanding and respect for those who serve our country and community through the United States Military and different law enforcement Organizations. I would like to take the time to thank them for their daily sacrifices and hard work. Without them we would not have the opportunity to pursue our education in a safe environment. I would also like to thank our parents who are always there for us and do everything to ensure that we succeed. I also want to extend my gratitude towards Major Hooker and Petty Officer Philips for guiding me in creating the JROTC honor society. Both of them have served in the United States military a combined total of 41 years of service and do an amazing job teaching us cadets about leadership, proper wear of the uniform, physical fitness, military etiquette and knowledge, drill, color guard and important life skills.
I also want to thank the newly retired Senior Chief Cavanagh for all that she has taught us cadets. I want to thank my Vice President Andres Almonte, Secretary Andrew Kolesar and Treasurer Michael Kanarian for all they have done for the benefit of the NJROTC Honor Society. The JROTC has given me some very important once in a lifetime opportunities that I will be forever grateful for. Such as attending Basic Leadership Training, the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, F.B.I. Teen Academy and Boys’ State New York. The JROTC has influenced me to want to major in Homeland Security and go into law enforcement.
Naval Science is the best class this school has to offer. I met some of my best friends from the NJROTC. My time in the unit has also, taught me the value of giving back to others through community service. Our Cadets generally enjoy giving back to the community. Congratulations, to everyone who got into an Honor Society tonight especially those in the JROTC Honor Society.
